Course Description:
This course introduces students to the foundational disciplines of the Qurʾānic sciences through a structured overview of al-Suyūṭī’s al-Itqān fī ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān. It surveys key topics such as revelation and compilation, Makkan and Madinan classification, causes of revelation, abrogation, modes of recitation, linguistic features, and principles of interpretation. The course equips students with the conceptual framework and technical vocabulary necessary for advanced study of tafsīr, ensuring an informed and methodical engagement with the Qurʾān.
Prerequisites:
None. This course will utilize an English text.
Course Requirements:
This class meets in person, and live attendance is required. Recorded audio will be provided only for excused absences. To obtain credit, students must complete all assigned coursework which may include written assignments, term papers, quizzes, and exams.
No Class Dates: Apr 10 (Spring Break), Jul 3 (Independence Day weekend)

Transcripts: This is a credit-bearing course. Final grades will be permanently recorded on your official student transcript.
Retake Policy: Students are permitted to retake this course in future semesters to improve their recorded grade.
