Course Description:
This course serves as an introductory study of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) according to the Ḥanafī school of law. Utilizing the renowned primer Marāqī al-Saʿādāt (Ascent to Felicity) by the 11th-century Egyptian jurist Imām al-Shurunbulālī, students will explore the essential rules governing the validity and soundness of Islamic worship.
The course is designed to provide a practical understanding of the “Fiqh of Worship” (Fiqh al-ʿIbādāt). Students in this first part of a two-course sequence will move beyond surface-level ritual to understand the precise conditions, integrals, and nullifiers of purification and prayer. This foundation ensures that the student’s daily worship is performed correctly and with confidence, in accordance with established tradition.
Prerequisites:
None. This course will utilize an English translation of the core text.
Course Requirements:
This class meets in person, and live attendance is required. Recorded audio will be provided only for excused absences. To obtain credit, students must complete all assigned coursework which may include written assignments, term papers, quizzes, and exams.
